Travis Homer
Travis Homer Could have role in offense
Mon, Jun 12, 2023, 1:43 PM
Homer figures to be a key special teamer for the Bears and could also earn a role on passing downs, Brad Biggs of The Chicago Tribune reports.
Analysis: He struggled to stay healthy in Seattle and didn't get many opportunities as a runner, but Homer nonetheless managed to develop a reputation for pass-blocking while also handling a lot of special teams snaps whenever healthy. The 2019 sixth-round pick signed a two-year, $4 million deal with $1.75 million guaranteed this March, making him part of a Chicago backfield that also includes Khalil Herbert, D'Onta Foreman and rookie fourth-rounder Roschon Johnson.
Dante Pettis
Dante Pettis Signs with Chicago
Wed, May 11, 2022, 7:54 PM
Pettis (shoulder) agreed to a contract with the Bears on Wednesday, Doug Kyed of Pro Football Focus reports.
Analysis: The 26-year-old appeared in three games for the Giants last year and caught 10 passes for 87 yards and a touchdown before undergoing season-ending surgery in November. A 2018 second-round pick by San Francisco, Pettis has failed to find much success since totaling 467 receiving yards and five scores during his rookie campaign.
Tajae Sharpe
Tajae Sharpe Heading to Chicago
Wed, May 11, 2022, 7:07 PM
Sharpe agreed to a one-year contract with the Bears on Wednesday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: Sharpe appeared in 15 games for Atlanta during the 2021 campaign and caught 25 of 37 targets for 230 yards and zero touchdowns. The 27-year-old figures to compete for a depth role in training camp.
Nathan Peterman
Nathan Peterman Signs one-year deal with Chicago
Wed, May 11, 2022, 2:11 PM
The Bears signed Peterman to a one-year contract Wednesday, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: Peterman spent the last two seasons in Las Vegas, appearing in two games and totaling 15 offensive snaps. The 2017 fifth-round pick will compete with Trevor Siemian for the backup spot behind Justin Fields.
Justin Fields
Justin Fields Speed added to receiver room
Sat, Apr 30, 2022, 10:57 AM
Fields now has two receivers that run a sub-4.4 40-yard dash after the Bears added Velus Jones in the third round of the NFL Draft, Adam Jahns of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Jones, who ran a 4.31 40-yard dash, joins Darnell Mooney as the second receiver on the Bears with elite speed. During the offseason, the Bears made it a point to add weapons to complement Fields' arm strength when signing Byron Pringle and Equanimeous St. Brown, but Jones adds another level of speed to the mix. If the team can put together an offense that combines Fields' running ability with a downfield-passing element, he could emerge as a strong fantasy starter with elite upside this season.
Dazz Newsome
Dazz Newsome Competition added to roster
Sat, Apr 30, 2022, 10:45 AM
Newsome now faces a tougher battle for snaps after the Bears drafted Velus Jones, Adam Jahns of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: After being selected in the sixth round of the 2021 Draft, Newsome played in just three games, catching two passes for 23 yards. With the team looking to add speed to the receiver group, it added Byron Pringle and Equanimeous St. Brown in free agency along with Jones in the draft. Newsome will likely need to have an impressive training camp in order to earn significant snaps in the regular season.
Equanimeous St. Brown
Equanimeous St. Brown New competition at receiver
Sat, Apr 30, 2022, 10:38 AM
St. Brown may face an uphill battle for playing time after the Bears selected Velus Jones in the third round of the 2022 Draft, Adam Jahns of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: In the Bears' quest to add speed to their receiver room in the offseason, St. Brown and Byron Pringle were added in free agency. However, now that the Bears used the No. 71 pick in the draft to select Jones, who ran a 4.31 40-yard dash, St. Brown is expected to enter training camp outside the top three receivers on the depth chart.
Byron Pringle
Byron Pringle Arrested in traffic incident
Mon, Apr 25, 2022, 9:31 AM
Pringle was arrested in Florida on Saturday and charged with reckless driving and driving with a suspended license, Courtney Cronin of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Pringle, who joined the Bears on a one-year, $4.125 million deal earlier this offseason, was pulled over by Florida Highway Patrol after he was allegedly doing donuts with his vehicle on a public road, according to the police report. It's unclear if Pringle will face any discipline from the league as a result of the incident, but any decision on that front likely wouldn't be made until the legal process concludes. With the Bears losing Allen Robinson in free agency, Pringle is projected to slot in as a starting receiver for Chicago after setting career-high marks across the board in 2021 with 42 receptions, 568 receiving yards and five touchdowns.
Justin Fields
Justin Fields Preparing to run new system
Wed, Apr 20, 2022, 11:03 AM
Fields is learning a new offense that's expected to cater to his strengths, the Bears' official site reports.
Analysis: After entering his rookie season as a backup, Fields now enters camp working with the starters, though he'll again be learning a new offensive system. With the coaching staff intent on putting Fields' in the best position to succeed, it's likely that his running ability along with his ability to throw deep will be prioritized. Fields' average of 56 rushing yards over the last five games of his rookie season shows he can be a useful fantasy contributor even if the Chicago passing game is a work in a progress under new offensive coordinator Luke Getsy.
James O'Shaughnessy
James O'Shaughnessy Signed by Chicago
Mon, Apr 18, 2022, 9:42 AM
The Bears signed O'Shaughnessy to a one-year contract Monday.
Analysis: O'Shaughnessy joins a tight end room led by Cole Kmet alongside Ryan Griffin and Jesper Horsted. The former was limited to just seven appearances with Jacksonville last season, as he dealt with hip and ankle injuries, but he now appears fully healthy. In those seven contests, O'Shaughnessy secured 24 of 34 targets for 244 yards, but he was held without a touchdown.
Ryan Griffin
Ryan Griffin Links up with Chicago
Fri, Apr 8, 2022, 12:01 PM
Griffin is signing a one-year contract with the Bears, Mark Grote of WSCR Radio reports.
Analysis: Griffin has 67 career starts in 119 regular-season games but likely will fill a depth role with the Bears behind 2020 second-round pick Cole Kmet, who showed signs of progress in the second half of last season. Griffin, meanwhile, caught 27 of 42 targets for 261 yards and two TDs in 14 games (12 starts) for the Jets. He turned 32 earlier this offseason and has never reached 500 yards in a season.
Jesper Horsted
Jesper Horsted Inks tender with Bears
Tue, Apr 5, 2022, 10:44 AM
Horstead signed a one-year contract as an exclusive-rights free agent with the Bears on Tuesday, Brendan Sugrue of USA Today reports.
Analysis: Horsted was tendered by Chicago back in March, and he will now officially return to the team. The depth tight end mostly contributed on special teams last season, handling just six offensive snaps in seven appearances.
Nick Foles
Nick Foles Could be traded
Fri, Mar 25, 2022, 9:35 AM
The Bears have reportedly looked into trading Foles, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: With the team having added fellow QB Trevor Siemian to the mix behind starter Justin Fields via free agency, it looks like Foles could be the odd man out. The 33-year-old appeared in just one game with the Bears last season and if he is dealt, he'd presumably be viewed as a backup option by his next team.
Trevor Siemian
Trevor Siemian Joining Bears QB room
Thu, Mar 24, 2022, 10:32 PM
Siemian signed a two-year deal with the Bears on Tuesday, according to his agent.
Analysis: Siemian spent the 2021 season primarily as the backup in New Orleans. However, he did start for a string of five games in the middle of the season, during which he completed 57.2 percent of his passes for 1,083 yards, nine touchdowns and three interceptions. While Siemian won't have the opportunity to start in Chicago barring an injury to Justin Fields, he has proven to be a strong backup and viable spot starter throughout his five-year career. Nick Foles also remains in the picture, but he was often a healthy scratch when the rest of the quarterback room was healthy in 2021.
Equanimeous St. Brown
Equanimeous St. Brown Officially signs with Chicago
Wed, Mar 23, 2022, 5:20 PM
St. Brown signed a contract with Chicago on Wednesday, Larry Mayer of the Bears' official site reports.
Analysis: The Bears also brought in Byron Pringle as a free-agent signing after losing Allen Robinson to the Rams during the offseason, but St. Brown should still have a chance to compete for targets behind Darnell Mooney ahead of the 2022 campaign. During his third professional season with Green Bay in 2021, St. Brown hauled in nine of 17 targets for 98 yards while rushing three times for 14 yards.
Khari Blasingame
Khari Blasingame Inks one-year deal
Tue, Mar 22, 2022, 6:52 PM
Blasingame signed a one-year contract with the Bears on Tuesday, Larry Mayer of the Bears' official site reports.
Analysis: Blasingame was not tendered a contract by the Titans and will now join the Bears as a free agent. The 25-year-old appeared in 11 games last season, compiling six yards on three carries and two receptions for four yards on two targets. However, Blasingame's value comes as a blocker, who helped lead the way for Derrick Henry for parts of the last three seasons, including when Henry led the league in rushing in 2019 and 2020. He'll now work to help David Montgomery accomplish the same feat in 2022.
Byron Pringle
Byron Pringle New home in Chicago
Thu, Mar 17, 2022, 7:19 PM
The Bears and Pringle agreed to a contract Thursday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: As often happens following coach or general manager hirings, new GM Ryan Poles is bringing a player from his previous team to his new one. Pringle is on the heels of his best campaign by a long shot, as he reeled in 42 of 60 passes for 568 yards and five touchdowns in 17 games with the Chiefs last season. He'll slot in as the No. 2 wide receiver behind Darnell Mooney for the time being in Chicago.
Equanimeous St. Brown
Equanimeous St. Brown Expected to sign with Bears
Thu, Mar 17, 2022, 5:39 PM
St. Brown is expected to sign a contract with the Bears on Thursday, Aaron Wilson of ProFootballNetwork.com reports.
Analysis: St. Brown had a career-low mark in receiving yards last year, as he secured nine of 17 targets for 98 yards while rushing three times for 14 yards. The Bears lost Allen Robinson via free agency during the offseason, so St. Brown should have a chance to carve out a role behind Darnell Mooney in a re-tooling Chicago wideout corps.
Darrynton Evans
Darrynton Evans Claimed by Bears
Fri, Mar 11, 2022, 4:49 PM
The Bears have claimed Evans off waivers from the Titans.
Analysis: The 2020 third-rounder was waived by the Titans on Thursday, but now that he's been claimed by the Bears, Evans will look to secure a depth role in Chicago's backfield behind David Montgomery and Khalil Herbert, who remain under contract with the team in 2022. Injuries derailed Evans' first two pro seasons, but when healthy, the 5-foot-10, 203-pounder offers change-of-pace utility.
Jesper Horsted
Jesper Horsted Tendered one-year deal
Tue, Mar 8, 2022, 8:30 PM
Horsted was tendered a one-year contract by the Bears on Tuesday, Larry Mayer of the Bears' official site reports.
Analysis: Horsted appeared in seven games for the Bears last season, seeing just six offensive snaps, but he caught two of his three targets for 21 yards and two touchdowns. The 25 year-old has spent two seasons with the Bears after going undrafted out of Princeton. With fellow tight ends Jimmy Graham and Jesse James set to be free agents, Horsted has an opportunity to earn a larger role next season.
